Severe abdominal pain prompts medical evacuation and shortened climb up Cho Oyu
A Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance client and her husband were climbing Cho Oyu, on the Nepal-Tibet border, when she felt sharp pains in her abdomen. Her husband, a physician, suspected an inflamed gall bladder, provided her with anti-inflammatory medication, and advised against any summit attempt. They descended from Camp 1 to Advanced Base Camp where her symptoms re-appeared. She had to be medically evacuated via helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu.
A physical exam at the hospital confirmed her husband’s diagnosis and the local doctor recommended further testing. The client elected to have these exams and any resulting treatment performed at home in Germany. The couple re-booked their flights and returned home.
As a result, they had to forfeit the lost climbing days paid to their outfitter and incurred additional airline fees and medical expenses: $51,200 in total. As comprehensive travel insurance policyholders with Ripcord, they filed a trip interruption claim and Ripcord reimbursed them in full.
