First female Afghan marathon finisher in home country
As an accomplished ultra-runner and globetrotting human rights lawyer, Stephanie Case finds herself training in some pretty far flung places. One day in Afghanistan, a few years ago, while working at the U.N. compound in Kabul, she decided to hop a ride on a helicopter to log some challenging miles up in the Hindu Kush.
It was there, overlooking the snowcapped peaks, that Stephanie realized that few Afghan women will have this same liberating feeling, here in their own home country. She thought, why not start a running club to help women and girls overcome the harmful effects of conflict? While she faced some initial doubts about the feasibility of the project, she said it was actually the Afghan women who pushed her to try. The result: Free To Run.
She told Runner’s World: “I thought, if they’re interested and brave enough to try this, I should be brave enough to help them,” she says.
In 2015, A Free To Run member became the first Afghan woman to complete a marathon in her home country. The next year, a Free To Run-trained mixed-gender team finished the 4Deserts race in Sri Lanka, a 155-mile through the island’s jungles, beaches and mountain villages.

“In our line of work, our insurance has to be more than just good – it has to be the best,” Stephanie said. “We trust the people behind Ripcord and have seen their proven track record.”
