As an accomplished ultra-runner and globetrotting human rights lawyer, Stephanie Case finds herself training in some pretty far flung places. One day in Afghanistan, a few years ago, while working at the U.N. compound in Kabul, she decided to hop a ride on a helicopter to log some challenging miles up in the Hindu Kush.

It was there, overlooking the snowcapped peaks, that Stephanie realized that few Afghan women will have this same liberating feeling, here in their own home country. She thought, why not start a running club to help women and girls overcome the harmful effects of conflict? While she faced some initial doubts about the feasibility of the project, she said it was actually the Afghan women who pushed her to try. The result: Free To Run.

She told Runner’s World: “I thought, if they’re interested and brave enough to try this, I should be brave enough to help them,” she says.

In 2015, A Free To Run member became the first Afghan woman to complete a marathon in her home country. The next year, a Free To Run-trained mixed-gender team finished the 4Deserts race in Sri Lanka, a 155-mile through the island’s jungles, beaches and mountain villages.

Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance is proud to support Free To Run as they take on new challenges around the world.

“In our line of work, our insurance has to be more than just good – it has to be the best,” Stephanie said. “We trust the people behind Ripcord and have seen their proven track record.”

“Ripcord helps me sleep at night knowing my team members are covered, no matter what tricky situation may come their way.”

A university employee and Redpoint client was working in Costa Rica when she felt severe abdominal pain. She went to a local clinic’s emergency room, where it was confirmed she was suffering from her chronic gastrointestinal disorder, possibly exacerbated by an infection. She was transported by ambulance to a better-equipped local hospital.

University officials contacted Redpoint operations to monitor her condition at the Central American hospital. Redpoint medical staff communicated with Costa Rican physicians about her care and the medicines she was being prescribed. Redpoint’s Stanford-affiliated physicians reviewed all of the recommendations and prescriptions and concurred with the local physicians’ treatment.

Redpoint kept in regular communication with the university, and the patient has been discharged. She reported that she is feeling better.

‘Ripcord is my backup, they’re on speed dial’

As avalanche dangers rise to ‘extreme’ in the Pacific Northwest, and continue to pose risks to skiers and snowboarders in California and Colorado, experts are warning weekend mountaineers how to recognize avalanche dangers and protect themselves if they are caught.

Doug Chabot is one of the country’s leading experts on snowpack, the director of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, and a Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance client, A few weeks ago, he sat down with a Montana radio station to talk about these dangers.

Doug is a mountain guide, a climber, and has worked for the GNFAC as an avalanche specialist for more than 20 years. He’s been on numerous climbing expeditions to Alaska, Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan, resulting in many first ascents and new routes. In 2011, he co-founded Iqra Fund, a nonprofit doing education work for girls in northern Pakistan.

While returning from a work event in Tampa, Florida, an employee of a Redpoint client was at the airport, lost the use of his legs unexpectedly, and collapsed. He was taken to a Tampa hospital where he was diagnosed with a rare disease. His doctors said he could expect to be hospitalized for up to three months.

The client asked to be transferred to his home in Minnesota to be closer to family, and his employer contacted Redpoint. Redpoint’s operations staff immediately went to work communicating with a receiving hospital near his home, and arranging for transportation once the patient had been accepted. The team oversaw the transfer of medical records to the Minnesota hospital, monitored his condition, and sent updates to the family on a regular basis.

Redpoint organized an air ambulance from Florida to Minnesota for the client, accompanied by a nurse and respiratory therapist. He has been admitted to his home hospital and is on the road to recovery.

The mountains of Azerbaijan

A Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance client was traveling in the mountains of Azerbaijan when he received a call from his company, saying there had been an emergency. He was forced to cancel the remainder of his trip, for which he had paid thousands of dollars.

The traveler was the operations director for an aviation company, and one of their aircraft was involved in a fatal crash. He had to return home immediately. Soon thereafter filed a claim to recover the non-refundable portion of his trip. Ripcord reimbursed him for those lost travel days.

Trip interruption and trip cancellation are just two of the benefits of a comprehensive policy with Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance. One of the provisions for reimbursement of a cancelled or interrupted trip include disasters that interrupt your business operations.

Travelers turning to small, remote villages in Europe over cities, Airbnb says

Village bookings 42 percent higher than in major cities

Online home-share marketplace Airbnb is working with authorities in a small Italian town this year to help restore an old artists’ home, part of Airbnb’s effort to create more space in remote destinations in Europe they say are increasingly attractive to travelers.

Civita di Bagnoregio

“New research conducted by JFC Consultants said that visitors are driven to small villages like Civita by ‘authenticity, tradition and identity.’” Airbnb noted in a release. “They estimate that there will have been 14.7 million guests to small villages in Italy in 2016, up from 13.2 million in 2015.”

Airbnb guest bookings in villages are 42 percent higher than in cities, the company noted.

The guests stay longer in these remote locations (4.6 nights), a significant source of income for the local economies. Tourism accounts for more than 5% of Italy’s GDP.

The company’s first focus is the picturesque hilltop community of Civita di Bagnoregio in the central region of Lazio, less than 100 miles from Rome. The town was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1980, including an artist’s home known as Greco House.

“The home will be transformed to its former glory with a dedicated workspace for artists. It will be complemented with exclusive artwork from a world-renowned artist to celebrate and inspire creativity,” Airbnb said.

“Earlier this year, the President of Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti was leading a difficult bid to secure a UNESCO World Heritage Site bid for Civita di Bagnoregio, a small mountain town in central Italy. In April, the Italian Airbnb community took action in support of Civita’s bid. Success seemed unlikely, but within just a few days, thousands of Airbnb guests and hosts signed the online petition and helped put Civita into consideration for world heritage status.”

Airbnb listings in Italy increased by 90 percent in 2015.
