Two young women, both Ripcord Rescue Travel InsuranceTM clients, were hiking to Everest Base Camp when one of the friends began to experience altitude sickness. She felt dizzy, developed pulmonary symptoms including a productive cough and a burning sensation in her lungs, and eventually was unable to continue her trek. Every time she attempted to stand up she fell back down to her knees.
After discussing with Redpoint Client Services, the sick woman’s mother purchased a Garmin Delorme inReach two-way messaging satellite device for her 22-year-old daughter before the trip. When she felt unable to walk, the Ripcord client texted Redpoint Operations from her inReach device, automatically sending a signal with their location. After ascertaining the nature of the emergency, Redpoint Operations sent an AS350 helicopter to evacuate her and her friend from a landing zone on the Himalayan mountainside.
Redpoint flew the Ripcord clients to a clinic in Kathmandu where doctors diagnosed the young woman as having an infection combined with her altitude sickness. Her parents were kept apprised regularly of their location and their well-being.
