‘Redpoint provided top-notch care, and allowed me to sleep,’ the mother said

Two young women, both Ripcord Rescue Travel InsuranceTM clients, were hiking to Everest Base Camp when one of the friends began to experience altitude sickness. She felt dizzy, developed pulmonary symptoms including a productive cough and a burning sensation in her lungs, and eventually was unable to continue her trek. Every time she attempted to stand up she fell back down to her knees.

After discussing with Redpoint Client Services, the sick woman’s mother purchased a Garmin Delorme inReach two-way messaging satellite device for her 22-year-old daughter before the trip.  Redpoint Operations helped configure the device and recommended how best to use it. When she felt unable to walk, the Ripcord client texted Redpoint Operations from her inReach device, automatically sending a signal with their location. After ascertaining the nature of the emergency, Redpoint Operations sent an AS350 helicopter to evacuate her and her friend from a landing zone on the Himalayan mountainside.

Redpoint flew the Ripcord clients to a clinic in Kathmandu where doctors diagnosed the young woman as having an infection combined with her altitude sickness. Her parents were kept apprised regularly of their location and their well-being.

“Redpoint not only provided top-notch care of the girls when they needed it most but it allowed me to sleep the month they’ve been in Nepal,” said the girl’s mother, Monica.

“From the front end where Client Services described the program and answered ALL my questions to the prep stage, to where your operations staff patiently helped me configure the new satellite phone, to the team on the ground in Nepal who rescued the girls at about 13k feet above sea level – as the girls described as “very kind, cautious and professional,” it’s been a phenomenal experience!

“I can’t tell you how many folks I’ve shared my experience with! Thanks again for ALL you do!!!”

The young woman returned with her friend to a hotel room in Kathmandu that evening, highlighting another important difference between Ripcord Rescue Travel InsuranceTM and other medical evacuation plans: Ripcord clients do not need to be hospitalized or require a local doctor’s decision that they need to be hospitalized in order for their plan to pay for the evacuation. Ripcord has a “third trigger” for a rescue when an emergent medical condition may result in permanent injury. Given this client’s condition, Redpoint medical staff made the decision that she needed to be evacuated, and initiated the rescue immediately.
