Headaches and shortness of breath at 14,300 feet

Redpoint rescued by helicopter a Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance client from near the base of Mt. Everest as he was suffering from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

The 50-year-old Australian was trekking along the trail to Everest Base Camp through Namche, and then Tengboche, but as he approached Dingboche at 4,360 meters (14,300 feet), he could not continue. He had been suffering from throbbing headaches, shortness of breath and other symptoms of AMS.

His group contacted Redpoint’s medical team and described the client’s condition. Because Ripcord covers emergent medical conditions even if they do not require hospitalization, which is common for high altitude sickness, Redpoint rapidly activated a helicopter rescue to transport the Ripcord client to Kathmandu.

He was treated at a clinic there, discharged, and plans to return home to Australia after a few days’ rest in a hotel.
